Tragedy as woman dies on railway line in Manchester

The death of a female on railway tracks has been sadly confirmed by police.

Emergency services were called to Mauldeth Road railway station in south Manchester on Saturday morning.

Police and paramedics attended shortly before 11.45am.

It followed reports made into emergency services control rooms of a 'casualty on the tracks', British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed.

BTP officers were assisted by Greater Manchester Police officers. Sadly, paramedics pronounced the casualty dead at the scene.

BTP confirmed the death was not being treated as suspicious.

A file of evidence will now be handed to a coroner ahead of a possible inquest.

BTP has not revealed the age of the female or her name.

The tragedy led to the temporary closure of the train station and the railway line, which serves Manchester and Cheshire, GMP confirmed.

Trains were diverted and replacement bus services launched.

In a statement to the Manchester Evening News on Saturday night, a BTP spokesman said: "Officers were called to Mauldeth Road railway station at 11.43am today - October 16 - following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a female was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
