Tragedy as woman dies after police incident at Leeds train station

Police have announced that a woman tragically died in an incident at a Leeds train station at the weekend that left the line closed for hours.

National Rail and Northern issued updates in the early afternoon of Saturday, October 15, to let passengers know that the line between Leeds and York train stations was blocked due to an incident. Many trains were cancelled or delayed by over an hour - with problems remaining after the line reopened around 3pm.

British Transport Police have now issued an update, announcing a woman has sadly died after a casualty was reported on the tracks at East Garforth train station. They said her death isn't being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "British Transport Police were called to East Garforth station at 12.44pm on Saturday 15 October following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Rail replacement buses were in operation on Saturday, and passengers were able to travel on other routes.

National Rail said on Saturday: "If you’ve been affected by what happened on the network today, there is always someone to talk to. You can contact the @Samaritans on 116 123 from any phone for a confidential chat."
