Tragedy as woman, 26, found drowned in Manchester reservoir hours after going missing

A young woman found drowned in a Manchester reservoir took her own life after suffering with depression, a coroner has ruled.

Paulina Biernacka, 26, was reported missing by friends at around 11am on Sunday, 18 October last year.

In a police appeal published at the time, Greater Manchester Police said she had been last seen on Jetson Street in Abbey Hey, Gorton, at around 1am.

Area coroner Zak Golombeck told Manchester's Coroner's Court: "Paulina was missing from the home that she shared with others.

"As a result of their concern they phoned the police at around 11am.

"A high risk missing from home search commenced later in the day at around 5pm.

"A match of the mobile phone owned by Paulina was pinpointed to a site adjacent to the reservoir within Debdale Park in Gorton.

"As a result, an underwater search team was called and tasked with performing a search of the lake."

He added: "About 10 metres from her phone and under about 2 metres of water Paulina's body was discovered.

"An initial examination revealed no obvious injuries or signs of third party involvement.

"She was identified at the scene."

A pathologist recorded the cause of death as drowning, a court heard (ASP)

A pathologist carried out a post-mortem examination and toxicology tests and returned a cause of death as drowning, the court heard.

Paulina was born in Poland before moving to the UK. The court heard her close friend Lukasz Stocklosa acted as a family representative and spoke to a police coroner's officer to help with inquiries.

He told PC Taylor that he had known Paulina since around 2012 and that she had 'felt depressed at various times', Mr Golombeck said.

"However, there was one particular reference to a time when Mr Stocklosa and Paulina were able to enjoy a positive experience together when they attended Old Trafford to watch a Manchester United game.

"Mr Stocklosa describes Paulina at the game as being animated and excited as he had never seen her before.

"Mr Stocklosa also refers to an incident Paulina informed him about when she was living in Poland and she intended to take her own life.

"In terms of her time in the UK, she would quite often appear to be low in mood and Mr Stocklosa describes Paulina's emotions as up and down."

The court heard Paulina had left a note on an electronic device making clear her intention to take her own life.

Mr Golombeck did not read the note out in full but said it included sentences including 'I'm helpless' and 'I'm like a definition of the English word pathetic'.

The coroner recorded a conclusion that Paulina took her own life and that the cause of death was drowning.

Speaking to Mr Stocklosa via videolink Mr Golombeck added: "I would like to offer my condolences for the loss of Paulina and I would ask that my condolences are extended to her family and friends."

Mr Stocklosa thanked the court and added that her family hoped Paulina's laptop could now be returned as she was described as a 'gamer' and used it frequently.

Mr Golombeck said he would liaise with police to ensure the laptop is released.
