Tragedy as two elderly residents die in Edinburgh care home from coronavirus

Two elderly residents have died after contracting coronavirus at an Edinburgh care home, with further residents said to be showing symptoms.

It is understood there have been four deaths at Letham Park care home, on Ferry Road, in the past week.

Two of the deaths have been linked to COVID-19, with the two more deaths suspected to be due to the deadly virus.

A spokesperson told the Daily Record that ten other residents are showing symptoms of the virus but added that one resident, who tested positive, is said to be improving.

The latest care home deaths follows tragedy at an East Lothian care home where coronavirus is understood to have already killed nine elderly people. Responding to questions from Edinburgh Live, Tranent Care Home refused to confirm the number of deaths.

The news comes amid growing fears that the Government is underestimating the true death toll from coronavirus in the UK and the impact that the pandemic is having on the most vulnerable people.

The Office for National statistics revealed for the first time this week that 20 people had died of coronavirus in care homes across England and Wales in the week up to March 27.

However, due to a lag of 17 days between deaths and their announcement and the ONC's reliance on registered death certificates, it is thought that true figures are far higher.

200 people are already reported to have died in care homes due to coronavirus, with Care England estimating that the true death toll is likely to be closer to more than 1,000.
