Tragedy as Scots woman dies age 27 after long battle with cystic fibrosis

Tributes have been paid to a courageous young Scots woman after her death following a long fight with cystic fibrosis.

Following her tragic death on October 15, Shannon Sweeney, 27, has been described as a 'character' who was loved by everyone she met.

Loved ones of the massive Elton John fan, from Rutherglen, remembered her online for her sense of humour and outgoing personality.

Family friend Mandy Lafferty, who sadly lost her own daughter to the disease in 2018, has since launched a fundraiser to help pay for funeral costs.

Speaking to the Record she said: "Shannon was very outgoing and had the best sense of humour. She was really well liked within the cystic fibrosis community and the nurses. Everybody knows who Shannon is.

"She would do all these funny videos from hospital and keep everybody laughing. She battled very, very hard, especially the last two years.

"Shannon was such a lovely, down to earth young woman.

"She was just a character. I have a wee place for her in my heart."

Cystic fibrosis is a condition that causes sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system and in most cases is picked up at birth.

Although treatment is available, life expectancy of patients battling the condition is shortened.

Mandy, 45, previously fundraised for Shannon's bucket list two years ago so she could make precious memories with single mum Carol and sister Devon, who has heart problems.

Her own daughter Nicole was friends with Shannon, with the pair meeting while they received treatment at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Nicole sadly died holding her mum's hand at just 22-years-old on February 1, 2018.

In 2017, Mandy managed to raise more than £4,000 for Nicole's own bucket list so she could enjoy things she had dreamed of doing, like seeing the lions at Blair Drummond Safari Park and seeing The Vengaboys in concert.

Mandy said: "I knew Shannon through cystic fibrosis as my own daughter had it and also attended the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

"My daughter passed away on the 1st of February, 2018, after five weeks in hopsital.

"It is an absolutely awful disease, cystic fibrosis, it takes so many young lives. It is horrendous and it is a life long thing.

"It is a difficult enough time as it is losing a daughter for a mum, never mind dealing with a funeral to pay for.

"Shannon is a big loss to her mum and sister Devon. She is going to be a big loss to everyone who knew her."
