Tragedy as Scots fisherman dies after falling from boat in the North Sea sparking marine accident probe

A fisherman who fell overboard from a vessel in the North Sea has tragically died after being airlifted to hospital.

The alarm was raised at around 3.20am on Tuesday after a mayday call reporting that the unnamed man had got into difficulty in the water.

Emergency services including Lerwick lifeboat and the HM Coastguard helicopter were called to the scene around 30 miles southeast of Sumburgh, Shetland.

The coastguard said he was taken to hospital in Lerwick by helicopter.

But Police Scotland have now confirmed that the man has sadly passed away.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm a man has died following an incident on board a fishing boat off the coast of Shetland.

"Officers were made aware around 4am on Thursday, 18 February, 2021, of a man having gone overboard while the vessel was approximately 30 nautical miles south east of Shetland.

"A body was recovered from the water with the assistance of a HM Coastguard helicopter. All other crew members were uninjured.

"We are working with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch to establish the full circumstances. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course."
