Tragedy as person dies on railway tracks at station

A person has died on railway tracks at a station.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the tragedy wasn’t being treated as suspicious.

Rail services in and around Wigan have been cancelled or ‘severely delayed’ as a result, National Rail Enquiries said.

The sex or age of the person involved hasn’t been revealed.

BTP have confirmed no further details.

Police and paramedics were called to Leyland railway station in Lancashire at just before 3.40pm on Friday.

It followed reports of a ‘casualty on the tracks’, BTP said.

The person was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A file is being prepared for a coroner ahead of an inquest opening.

In a statement, British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Leyland station shortly before 3.40pm today, Friday, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Northern reported cancellations and disruption to services between Wigan North Western and Barrow-In-Furness railway stations as a result.

All lines were blocked.

Disruption is expected until 8pm.
