Tragedy as person dies on railway line

A person found on railway tracks has sadly died, police have confirmed.

The tragedy has caused delays to rail services in Manchester as a result as emergencies services attend the scene of the tragedy.

British Transport Police have confirmed the death isn't being treated as suspicious. No age or sex of the person has been revealed.

A coroner is being informed ahead of an inquest opening, BTP said.

Emergency services were called to a stretch of line in the Sowerby Bridge area of West Yorkshire at 8.30am on Friday morning.

The person was confirmed dead at the scene.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said services between Leeds and Manchester Victoria stations may be 'cancelled, delayed or revised'.

Train operator Northern said all services between Leeds and Manchester Victoria - in both directions - were unable to run as a result.

All passengers are being urged to check online before starting their journeys.

TfGM said rail tickets were being accepted on Metrolink tram services between Rochdale and Manchester until further notice.

"The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Sowerby Bridge and Hebden Bridge which is causing disruption to journeys between these stations," said an alert on National Rail Enquiries.

"Services may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.

"We anticipate disruption will continue until 11am."

Northern said: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Sowerby Bridge and Mytholmroyd all services between Leeds - Manchester Victoria and Leeds - Preston, in both directions are unable to run."

In a statement to the Manchester Evening News , British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to the line in Sowery Bridge shortly before 8.30am this morning following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
