'Amazing' mum-of-two, 35, dies after breaking ankle on night out

A tragic mum died on New Year's Eve following a routine operation after breaking her left ankle, an inquest heard.

Laura Griffiths, aged 35, had surgery to fit a plate and pins in her limb and it was left in a plaster cast.

But, during her stay in hospital , she suffered deep vein thrombosis in her leg and, as a result, a pulmonary infarction after blood supply to the lung tissue became blocked.

And the Huddersfield Examiner reports the mother-of-two died on December 31, more than two weeks after breaking her ankle during a night out.

The graduate, who lived in Huddersfield, leaves behind a four-year-old and a two-year-old.

A full inquest into the special needs teacher's death is scheduled later this year.

But, speaking after Laura's death, her sister Rachel Fomiatti said: "It has come as a horrific shock and we are just broken as a family.

"But what is becoming evident to us is that she was so amazing and so well loved by so many people."

Laura gained three university degrees and had worked as a social worker, mental health nurse and more recently as a pupil referral unit teacher supporting families across the region.

Dozens of friends left the mum tributes on social media.

Grief-stricken Rachel added: "She was clearly amazing, we always knew that.

"It is becoming apparent just how many other people thought that too.

"She touched so many lives and we have been inundated with messages and flowers, which Laura would have absolutely loved."
