Tragedy as more Coronavirus deaths in Leeds with latest death toll for city hitting 30

Another three people have died in Leeds after contracting coronavirus.

That means 30 Covid-19 patients have died in the city since the first two Leeds cases were diagnosed on March 1 and Yorkshire's death toll has reached 144.

Today, NHS England announced another 561 people, including 29 in Yorkshire, have died after testing positive for the virus.

They were between the ages of 22 and 100 years old. Forty four of those people did not have underlying health conditions and the youngest was just 25 years old.

Yesterday, Public Health England announced there are 29,474 confirmed cases of the virus across the UK, including 192 in Leeds, and 2,352 had died.

It is expected to update the figures later today.

LeedsLive understands Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has cleared dozens of beds and closed several wards at Leeds General Infirmary, as staff prepare for more coronavirus patients.

Yesterday, an Army helicopter landed at the hospital to drop off personnel who are working on the military’s response to the pandemic.

Harrogate Convention Centre is also being transformed into an NHS Nightingale Hospital to provide hundreds of extra beds for coronavirus patients in Yorkshire.

The UK remains under lockdown as the government has ordered people to only leave their homes under a list of “very limited purposes”, banned public gatherings of more than two people and ordered the closure of non-essential shops, schools, pubs and restaurants.

However, Boris Johnson is now sending a letter to 30 million UK households, in which he outlines even stricter lockdown rules which could come into place.
