A man's body has been discovered in the River Irwell in a rural area of Bury.
Police officers and firefighters were called to Waterside Road, in Summerseat near Ramsbottom, at around 10am this morning (November 16).
Roads in the area were closed off and remained shut through the early afternoon while an investigation was launched into the cause of the man's death.
Greater Manchester Police said the man was aged 'in his 50s'.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the force said: "Police were called just before 10:30am this morning (Tuesday 16 November) to reports of a person in the River Irwell off Waterside Road, Ramsbottom.
"Officers attended, and sadly found the body of a man believed to be in his 50s.

"Police remain at the scene, and enquiries are ongoing to identify the man, and establish the circumstances around his death."
A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added: "Just before 10.30am on Tuesday 16 November, two fire engines from Bury and Ramsbottom, a technical response unit and water incident unit attended reports of a person in the water at Waterside Road.
"Crews supported colleagues from GMP at the scene and were in attendance for just under two hours."
