Tragedy as man dies after New Year's Day swim at Brighton beach

A man has died after getting into difficulties while swimming at Brighton beach on New Year’s Day.

The 51-year-old was recovered from the water after he was seen in trouble at about 10.30am west of Brighton Palace Pier.

A spokesman for Sussex Police: “Police were alerted to a man who had been recovered from the sea after getting into difficulty to the west of Brighton Palace Pier at around 10.35am on Thursday 1 January.

“A 51-year-old man from Kettering was brought to shore and received medical attention.

“Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

“The coroner has been informed, and the death is not being treated as suspicious.”

It comes after two men went missing after taking part in a traditional Christmas Day swim in the Devon seaside town of Budleigh Salterton.

A number of people were rescued from the stormy water and checked by paramedics or taken to hospital as a precaution.

However two men, antiques dealer Matthew Upham, 63, and another man in his 40s, were not located.

Singer Kate Bush paid tribute to Mr Upham, describing him as “one of my very dearest friends” whom she’d known for 30 years.

She said: “He was one of those people who touched everyone he met.

“He was extraordinarily kind, thoughtful and lived life to the full.

“He was also a great deal of fun.

“His family are heartbroken and along with many of his friends, so am I.

“Matthew was a very strong swimmer. He had a great love for kayaking. He understood that the sea should be respected.”
