Tragedy as man dies after being struck by train between Kilmarnock and Ayr

A man has died after being struck by a train in Ayrshire last night.

Emergency crews raced to rail line near Kilmarnock to save the man after he was found on the tracks at 7.12pm.

Sadly the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragic incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Transport cops confirmed a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal following the man's death.

Services between Kilmarnock and Ayr were brought to a halt on Thursday evening as ScotRail confirmed the sad news.

ScotRail tweeted: "Sadly, a person has been struck by a train between Kilmarnock and Ayr.

"The emergency services are on their way. We can't run trains on this route for now, but services between Glasgow Central and Ayr aren't affected."

Stagecoach buses accepted ScotRail tickets and Smartcards on several routes between Ayr, Maybole, Girvan and Stranraer and on the X77 between Glasgow, Kilmarnock, Prestwick and Ayr.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to the line near Kilmarnock at 7.12pm yesterday (6 January) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious a file will be prepared for the procurator fiscal."
