Tragedy as man dies after being hit by train near Heaton Chapel station

A man has died after being hit by a train near Heaton Chapel station.

The tragic incident happened just before 1.30pm yesterday (Thursday).

Emergency services were called to reports of a 'casualty on the tracks'.

British Transport Police have confirmed today that the victim was a man, who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious, a spokesperson said.

A file in relation to his death will now be prepared for the coroner.

In a statement, a spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to the line near Heaton Chapel at 1.27pm yesterday (23 December) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

The train tracks between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport were blocked for several hours yesterday afternoon as emergency services attended the incident.

Several police and ambulance vehicles were pictured near Heaton Chapel station.

This morning (December 24), there are delays and cancellations to trains at Manchester Piccadilly after a man was found on the train tracks nearby.

He has been taken to hospital with 'life-changing' injuries.

'Major disruption' is expected until around 11am, according to National Rail.
