Tragedy as Callum Gillies, 25, dies after crashing into Ackworth bridge

Police have released the name of a young driver who has tragically died after crashing into a bridge in Wakefield.

Callum Gillies suffered serious injuries after his Citroen DS3 struck the railway bridge in Ackworth at around 9am on May 2.

The 25-year-old from Ackworth was rushed to hospital but despite extensive efforts to save his life, sadly later died from his injuries.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police are appealing for witnesses after a car collided with a bridge in Wakefield.

"It happened in Ackworth at about 9am on Sunday, May 2, when a Citroen DS3 travelling towards Badworth on the Doncaster Road, struck the railway bridge over the road."

Enquiries are continuing into the collision and anyone who witnessed it, or the movements of the vehicle prior to it, is asked to contact Wakefield District CID on 101 or online, quoting log reference 0398 of 2 May.
