A British woman has died after suffering a seizure during a snorkelling trip in Indonesia.
The 24-year-old was exploring the Semangko Sea near the famous Pink Beach in East Lombok on July 30 as part of a tour group of around 10 people when tragedy struck.
She had descended around 50ft below the surface alongside another diver — both believed to be guides on the trip — when she began showing signs of distress.
The woman started convulsing as she resurfaced, prompting the boat crew to haul her out of the water and rush her back to shore. Despite desperate efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead before reaching the Jerowaru Community Health Centre.
Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
East Lombok Police’s head of public relations, Nikolas Osma, said: “At around 8:30 WITA, the group arrived at the first location, Gili Peteluan, for snorkelling.
“Then, at around 09:15 WITA, they continued to the second spot, Semangko Sea at Pink Beach, for more snorkelling activities.
"After they finished at the second location at around 11:15 WITA, one of her fellow snorkelling guides asked the guests to return to the boat for a lunch break.
"The two guides then went diving again to a depth of about 10 to 15 metres.
“When she was about to return to the surface of the sea, the victim's condition suddenly became unusual, so her friend guided her to the surface”
He added that the captain took the boat to Telong-Elong Pier for transporation to the health centre, but the woman had sadly died by midday.
Her cause of death is currently unclear. Her body will remain at the Bhayangkara Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities are also set to investigate the crew and tourists on board the boat.
The UK Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Indonesia and are in touch with the local authorities.”
