A 15-year-old boy has died after getting into trouble in the sea near a Welsh beach.
Police launched a huge rescue operation after being called to Aberavon Beach in Port Talbot, South Wales at around 7.10pm yesterday.
The teenager, named as David Ejimofor, was pulled from the water but despite attempts to save him, he was pronounced dead a short while later.
South Wales Police had asked members of the public to avoid the area while the incident was ongoing.
In an update posted on social media just after 11pm, Chief Inspector Richard Haines said: "Shortly before 7.10pm, officers were called to a report of a boy in the sea at Aberavon Beach, Port Talbot.
"A 15-year-old boy was located and despite the best efforts of members of the public and emergency services he sadly passed away.
"Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact us quoting 2300202601."
Archbishop Mark, of the Archdiocese in Cardiff, paid tribute on social media: "So saddened to hear of the tragic death of David Ejimofor, pupil at St Joseph's School, Aberavon.
"Promised his family I would ask the Catholics of S Wales to pray for them and their beloved son. May he rest in peace and Rise in Glory."
The coastguard along with the Welsh Ambulance Service and Wales Air Ambulance also attended.
A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "We were called on Monday, June 19, to reports of a medical emergency at Mariners Quay, Port Talbot.
"We sent one emergency ambulance, two rapid response vehicles, a duty operations manager, and our crews were support by Wales Air Ambulance."
Local councillor Matthew Crowley extended his condolences to the teenager's family.
He told Wales Online: "I've only seen what is online, but I understand there was an incident on the beach and a helicopter attended. Whether someone was airlifted out, I'm not sure.
"First and foremost, my thoughts are with the person affected, and their family as well."
