Tragedy as body of Billy McNeill's grandson found in Amsterdam canal

The mother of missing East Kilbride man Matthew McCombe - the grandson of Celtic legend Billy McNeill - said her "heart is broken" as she broke the tragic news that her son's body has been found.

Paula McCombe confirmed the devastating news to her family and friends on social media this morning.

Matthew, from Hairmyres, vanished from a hotel in Amsterdam 18 days ago while on a trip celebrating his 21st birthday.

He was last seen on Saturday, March 14 when he left the Novotel without his phone, passport or wallet.

Amsterdam Police have launched an investigation after his body was found in a canal at the Molenkade in the city's Duivendrecht.

Paula posted: "It is with great sadness that we are announcing our son Matthew McCombe’s body was found this morning.

"Matthew was much loved by all and our hearts are broken.

"We would like to thank everyone who has helped in the search for Matthew and for the love, compassion and kindness that has been extended to us since our arrival in Amsterdam.

"As a family we would kindly ask for our privacy to be respected in these sad times."

Matthew's distraught parents Paula and Charlie had made a desperate appeal for information on Dutch TV.

A spokeswoman for Amsterdam Police told the News: "This morning we found a body in the water at the Molenkade in Duivendrecht. Our colleagues discovered that this is the missing Matthew McCombe.

"We are investigating the cause, until that time we can’t speculate whether this is unexplained/suspicious/not suspicious.

"The family has been informed."
