Tragedy as body found in widespread search for missing Sunderland man

Police have found the body during a widespread search for a missing man in Sunderland.

Officers launched a huge operation across the city after a man in his 30s was reported missing from his home at around 9pm on Wednesday.

The police helicopter was deployed to help officers with sniffer dogs on the ground as they scoured the city for the missing man.

Mountain Rescue volunteers also joined police to assist with the search.

Northumbria Police has now confirmed the body of a man was found a short time later.

The man's family have been informed with officers believing there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly before 9pm yesterday (Wednesday) we received a report that a man in his 30s had gone missing from his home in Sunderland."

“A search was launched for the male in question, supported by the National Police Air Service (NPAS) and Mountain Rescue volunteers.

“Sadly, the male was found deceased a short time later.

"His family have been notified and there is not believed to be any third party involvement. A report will be made for the coroner.”
