Tragedy as body found after overnight search for kayaker who vanished off coast

Tragedy has struck amid Britain's heatwave after a body was found in the search for kayaker who went missing on Saturday.

Shane Davies, 33, disappeared after getting into "difficulty" while out off the coast of West Sussex.

An extensive search operation was then launched by the police and coastguard, which focused on the Pagham/Selsey beach area.

But the authorities sadly confirmed on Sunday that they had found a body after an overnight hunt.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Next of kin have been informed and the matter has been passed to the Coroner's Office."

Inspector Oliver Pullen said: "Our thoughts are with Shane's family at this incredibly difficult time.

"I'd like to thank Coastguard and other colleagues for their work to help find Shane."

Shane was wearing camouflaged shorts, a multi-coloured vest top and red life jacket at the time of his disappearance.

He had been out kayaking with a friend, police said.

Warnings about water safety have been issued as the sun continues to shine on Britain.

A number of people have already lost their lives while swimming in the nation's rivers as the mercury soars.

Lifeboat charity the RNLI said on Friday: "There might be some high temperatures forecast this weekend but the water is still cold.

"Don’t take risks. Remember: float to live."
