Tragedy as 12-year-old child reportedly dies on railway line

A child has reportedly died on railway lines in Merseyside.

Emergency services were called to the tracks near Bedford Road in Bootle shortly after 7pm on Monday.

A 12-year-old child had died following reports of two youngsters on the tracks , reports the Liverpool Echo.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman said: "Officers were called to the line in Bootle shortly after 7pm last night following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended. However, sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

The spokeswoman did not confirm any details of the deceased.

A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service confirmed an ambulance, rapid response vehicle and members of the Hazardous Area Response Team had been sent to the scene.

Trains on Merseyrail's Southport line were cancelled on Monday night following the incident.

In August a 12-year-old Scottish boy tragically died after coming into contact with live overhead power lines on a railway line in Bishopbriggs near Glasgow .

The boy was believed to be swinging a cable on a railway bridge when it came into contact with the power line below.

The youngster was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

But despite the best efforts of medical staff, he sadly passed away.
