Trafford Green Party group leader to step down

Trafford’s Green Party group leader is stepping down as boss.

Coun Geraldine Coggins has been the party’s chief in the borough for the last three years.

She was elected alongside Coun Dan Jerrome to represent Altrincham in 2018.

Now she has decided to stand down, but will remain on the council.

Coun Dan Jerrome will take her place.

Coun Michael Welton, also an Altrincham Green councillor, will step into Coun Jerrome’s former role as deputy group leader.

Coun Coggins said she will continue to represent Altrincham, with a particular focus on her party’s campaign for local action against the climate crisis.

Coun Coggins said: “This has been a really interesting role over the last three years. I’ve learnt a lot and am pleased with what the team has achieved on the council.

"Our work on the climate declaration, the use of glyphosphate-based weedkillers, our campaigning for 20mph limits and better walking and cycling infrastructure has demonstrated that Greens in the room can make a huge difference to the way the council works.

“When Dan and I first got elected in 2018, we were the first Greens on Trafford council and the only Greens in Greater Manchester. In fact it was the first time in Trafford’s history that they had a fourth party on the council – it took them a few weeks to find an office at the town hall for us!

“Now we have lots of Green councillors across Greater Manchester – on Stockport, Manchester and Tameside as well as Trafford. We’ve also got growing numbers elsewhere in the North West – from Burnley to Knowsley.

“In the run up to COP26 it has never been more important to have a focus on the climate crisis. Tackling the climate crisis means better lives for all of us. As Greens we are focused on changing the direction of the council and our local area to bring a just transition to a zero-carbon Trafford as soon as possible.”

Coun Daniel Jerrome said: “Geraldine has overseen the creation of a new party at Trafford council. She’s put Trafford Greens on the political map and held a complacent council firmly to account. I only hope I can continue this great record of achievement.

“It only shows that by getting active, making our voice heard, we can make a difference. Do come and help us if you can and help find the leaders of tomorrow.”
