Trafford councillor enters race to be next Stretford and Urmston MP as Kate Green steps down

A Labour councillor has entered the race to be Stretford and Urmston’s next MP.

Urmston councillor Joanne Harding, Trafford council ’s executive member for adult social care, has put her name forward to be the Labour candidate for the constituency after Kate Green MP announced her decision to stand down.

An Urmston resident for thirty-five years, Coun Harding paid tribute to Kate Green’s 12 years as the area’s MP.

“Kate has been, and will continue to be, a great MP and a servant to the people of the constituency, she will be a tough act to follow for whoever is selected," she said.

“This constituency has been my home for over thirty-five years. My daughter attended Flixton Girls School and I have proudly served as a councillor here in Urmston, representing the place I love for over a decade.

“I have a solid track record of campaigning in the constituency on a range of issues and am a strong voice standing up for our communities.

“I led the campaign to Save Trafford General A&E which culminated in a thousand people marching through the streets to save our local services, and I continue to host the NHS Party in the Park.

"This has now become an annual event to celebrate the fact that here in Trafford we are proud to have the ‘birthplace of our NHS’.

“Stretford and Urmston matters to me: it is, and always will be, at the heart of my politics.”

The timetable for the selection process of who will stand in Kate Green’s stead for Labour is set to be announced by the group in the coming months.
