Trafford council to support Afghan refugees’ resettlement

Trafford council has confirmed it will support the resettlement of Afghan refugees.

The authority said it is working alongside other Greater Manchester authorities and national teams to play its part in the national resettlement programme.

Around the world, images of people scrambling to get out of Afghanistan as the militant group the Taliban move in have prompted uproar and calls for support for those impacted.

Trafford does not currently have a large Afghan population.

That isn’t stopping the local authority offering help wherever it can.

A spokesperson for Trafford council said: “The situation in Afghanistan is deeply concerning and we have already agreed to create a coordination team in preparation to support the resettlement of Afghan refugees.

“We will be working with Greater Manchester and national leads to support the national resettlement programme.”

If Afghan refugees do arrive in Trafford, they will be supported by this newly formed coordination team to find accommodation and other forms of support.

The national resettlement programme was announced this week by the UK government.

It is a plan to house up to 20,000 Afghan refugees as they flee from the impending turmoil of their home nation.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in talks with leaders of the G7 nations on how best to support Afghan nationals fleeing the country.
