Trafford Council granted court order to evict travellers from field after 'complaints'

Trafford Council has been granted a court order to evict a group of travellers from a field following 'complaints'.

A number of vehicles and caravans have parked up on public land behind Blessed Thomas Holford School off Welman Way in Altrincham.

Trafford Council took legal action on Monday at Manchester Magistrates' Court.

The authority asked for permission to remove all vehicles and property from the land and the application was granted.

When the M.E.N visited the site on Monday afternoon, a large number of vehicles and caravans were still present.

Trafford Council said there had been 'complaints' but didn't give any further details (ASP)

Gypsies and Travellers are protected from discrimination by the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Human Rights Act 1998, together with all ethnic groups who have a particular culture, language or values.

According to the Trafford Council website, before travellers can be removed the authority must; show that the Gypsies/Travellers are on the land without consent, make enquiries regarding the general health, welfare and children's education, ensure that the Human Rights Acts 1998 has been fully complied with and follow a set procedure in terms of proving ownership of land and details of the illegal encampment that will enable them to successfully obtain the necessary authority from the Courts to order the Gypsies/Travellers to leave the site.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “Trafford Council received complaints that a number of vehicles and caravans were parked on public recreation land next to Welman Way.

"As a result, we applied for a court order to evict them from the site and that order has now been granted.”
