Trafford Centre's Barton Square revamp given the go-ahead

The £75m overhaul planned for Trafford Centre 's Barton Square that will see a brand new glass-domed roof cover the building has been approved.

Blueprints also include a complete redesign of the mall's interior that will eventually house a number of high street retailers at the Phoenix Way site.

Built at a cost of £90m, Barton Square opened in 2008 as an annexe to house furniture and homeware stores at the shopping centre.

Primark has already signed up as an anchor tenant and will operate from the former BHS store.

Other popular brands such as Next Home, Sea Life Manchester and Legoland Discovery Centre also form part of the retail and leisure the line-up.

Intu bosses say the scheme will be completed early next year.

It took members of the council's planning committee less than five minutes to approve the development during Thursday's meeting.

Six things we learned from this month's Greater Manchester Combined Authority meeting

Intu's head of planning, Mathew Nicholson, explained that Barton Square was more than a decade old and needed investment.

"Over the years the retail element of the centre has been less successful - and that has been mainly due to operational constraints," he said.

"However, this application will make better use of the floor space - and will help attract a range of retailers. There will also be lots of places to eat and drink.

"We have been working on the plans for the past year - and believe we have designed an appropriate scheme that will deliver significant benefits to the area."

As part of the application, Intu has agreed to pay almost £585,000 for improvements to local green space - and town centre infrastructure.
