Traffic warden who found TV fame embezzled £6000 for takeaways and Amazon shopping spree

A traffic warden who enjoyed TV fame has been ordered to pay back £6000 of funds he embezzled from a shinty club he helped set up.

David Martin, 49, was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work following the “violation of trust” when he appeared at Oban Sheriff Court for sentencing.

Martin, from Oban, appeared on the BBC TV series County Council in 2017 and was portrayed on screen as “The Happy Traffic Warden” due to his cheery encounters with motorists.

He was filmed shouting “jackpot” as money poured out of a parking ticket machine he was emptying. But at his court hearing yesterday it was payback time for Martin who pled guilty to spending Oban Lorn Shinty Club’s cash.

The court heard that between September 2016 and March 2019 Martin made cash withdrawals from the club’s account and bought items for himself, including takeaways, groceries and online items from Amazon, Wish and Netflix.

Sheriff Patrick Hughes said : “Your own actions have violated the trust that was placed in you.”

Argyll and Bute Council said: “We do not comment on individual cases.”
