Traffic wands for pop-up bike lane ripped from road and dumped in Glasgow canal

Traffic wands put in place to segregate a pop-up bike lane in Glasgow have been ripped from the road and dumped in a nearby canal in the far west of the city.

The red and white wands, which were located on Great Western Road in the Blairdardie area, were spotted by a member of the public floating in the Forth & Clyde Canal nearby.

They had been put in place back in July as part of Glasgow City Council's Spaces for People programme, which is providing additional space for physical distancing to protect public health and suppress a resurgence of Covid-19.

The red and white traffic wands were put in place to allow for light segregation for the new temporary cycle lane, which stretches for 2km in each direction along Great Western Road between Duntreath Avenue and Lincoln Avenue.

The new route was introduced to increase the practicality and attractiveness of active travel for both leisure and commuting, and was provided for by reallocating the inside lane (east and westbound) on Great Western Road from general traffic use to active travel use.
