Traffic threat to Ayr racing is lifted

The main artery to Ayr Racecourse has just re-opened after traffic chaos.

The closure of the A77 between Dutch House and the Whitletts roundabouts sparked severe disruption southbound, with most drivers forced to go through Prestwick.

A vehicle went on fire on the southbound lanes just before 9.30am, but nobody was hurt.

Police, aware of the Gold Cup horse racing at Ayr, managed to get the road open again in under two hours.

A police spokesman confirmed: "No crime was committed and we assisted with road safety."

Gates open for the William Hill Ladies Day at 12.10pm, first race underway at 1.40pm. A huge crowd is expected to enjoy the card in the sun.
