Traffic stress 'is back on the rise'

THE return of traffic jams as lockdown has been eased is now causing the most agitation behind the wheel, according to a leading road safety charity.

IAM RoadSmart’s stress-related investigation found that 42 per cent of motorists are anxious about returning to sitting in long tailbacks as more vehicles return to UK roads.

Meanwhile, simply getting used to busier roads again was causing stress among 33 per cent, while other drivers returning to the road who might be out of practice was causing concern for 27 per cent.

Others in the top 10 included stressing about getting to your destination on time (24 per cent) and returning to long car journeys (15 per cent). Coupled with that were fears that there would be nowhere open to stop for a rest (12 per cent).

Commuting, general fatigue when motoring and returning to the road when feeling rusty about driving all scored 11 per cent, while not knowing if your car was still capable of longer journeys worried seven per cent.

Drivers who feel they could benefit from increased driving confidence are able to book a range of courses through IAM RoadSmart. Visit www.iamroadsmart.com for more information.

IAM RoadSmart director of policy and research Neil Greig said: “As traffic starts getting heavier and heavier on UK roads, it must not be forgotten that congestion and worries about other road users can cause stress to many motorists.

“With more traffic comes potentially more uncomfortable driving situations, such as being stuck in a traffic jam for a lengthy period or simply being surrounded by extra vehicles.

“All drivers should give due care and consideration to their fellow motorists now that more and more of us are once again getting behind the wheel.”
