Traffic stopped on motorway due to 'medical emergency'

Traffic was stopped on a major motorway this evening due to a 'medical emergency'. There is a partial blockage with very slow traffic due to the emergency between J22 near Newton Le Willows and J23 near the East Lancashire Road.

All traffic was stopped for a short period but two lanes have been reopened. Traffic is moving very slowly however.

The incident was first reported on traffic website around 6.45pm INRIX with traffic 'trickling through', it says. There is at least three miles of congestion due to the incident, according to Highways North West, causing at least 20 minutes of delays.

Motorists are being urged to find a different route or allow extra journey time. A Highways North West tweet said: "Traffic has been STOPPED on the M6 northbound in Greater Manchester between J22 (Newton) and J23 (St Helens) due to a North West motorway police led incident involving a coach. There's a 30 minute delay on approach with 3 miles of congestion. Allow extra journey time this evening."

In an update as traffic has been released Highways North West said: "Traffic has now been released on the M6 northbound in Greater Manchester between J22 (Newton) and J23 (St Helens). 1 lane (of 3) remains closed due to an ongoing North West motorway police led incident involving a coach. There's a 20 minute delay on approach with 3 miles of congestion."
