KORIYAMA, Fukushima --Traffic resumed across the Kuji River in the Takachihara district of Yamatsuri, Fukushima Prefecture, on Sunday via a temporary bridge made of sandbags and large pipes.
The bridge originally there collapsed last month during Typhoon No. 19, when the river swelled.
From that time, residents in the district of about 30 people in 11 households were nearly isolated, able to cross the river only by using an iron train bridge of the JR Suigun Line.
After train services resumed Friday, residents were unable to cross the iron bridge except for two hours during the day, so this new temporary bridge was a welcome sight.
"Finally, I can go back to my previous lifestyle," said Hiromi Ishii, a 50-year-old company employee.
By automobile, bicycle or on foot, residents crossed the bridge to go to various destinations for shopping or to run other errands.
The town office plans to build another temporary bridge to replace the current one within about six months and a permanent bridge within three years.
