Traffic restrictions during Tokyo Games' ceremonies expected to cause traffic jams

(Credit: The Yomiuri Shimbun)

Sections of the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway and roads near the National Stadium in Shinjuku Ward will be closed to traffic at times around the opening and closing ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Traffic congestion is expected as a result, and the Games organizing committee, Tokyo metropolitan government and other relevant authorities are calling for drivers to use alternate routes or public transport.

Traffic restrictions will go into effect on Friday, when the Tokyo Games' opening ceremony will be held, in addition to Aug. 8, the day of the closing ceremony, as well as Aug. 24 and Sept. 5 when the opening and closing ceremonies of the Tokyo Paralympics will be held.

Closures will start in the afternoon and last until early the next day.

The measure will mainly affect the routes taken by exclusive bus services transporting athletes to and from the Olympic Village in Chuo Ward and the stadium. Routes include sections of the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway and streets around both areas.
