Large-scale traffic restrictions will be imposed on main roads in Tokyo by the Metropolitan Police Department for the Tokyo Marathon 2019 on Sunday.
As the areas near the marathon course are expected to be crowded with spectators and other people, the MPD urges people to "use the public transportation system or bypasses to detour around main roads on the course."
In the marathon, coorganized by The Yomiuri Shimbun and other entities, the wheelchair category starts at 9:05 a.m., while the general marathon race begins five minutes later.
Vehicle traffic will be prohibited from 6 a.m., long before the starting gun is fired, at the starting point in front of the Tokyo metropolitan government building in Shinjuku Ward and in its surrounding areas. Traffic will subsequently be limited or blocked on main roads such as Yasukuni-dori and Chuo-dori.
Traffic at the finish line on Gyoko-dori street in front of JR Tokyo Station in Chiyoda Ward will be prohibited for up to 14 hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
