Traffic overhaul plans for popular restaurant, shopping district

The ACT government has revealed plans to improve the access, appearance and safety of the popular Pialligo restaurant and boutique shopping district, including formalised parking spaces, landscaping and a separated walking path.

Businesses and local residents will soon able to have their say on the proposed design for pedestrian and traffic changes which affects Beltana Road in Pialligo and 200 metres into Kallaroo Road.

The design includes a coloured, textured concrete pedestrian path, traffic-calming measures for vehicles including speed humps and designated parking spaces near the main commercial areas.

As previously flagged by the government, a new left-in, left-out intersection will be constructed for Beltana Road, Kallaroo Road and Pialligo Avenue.

Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel said the upgrade to the Pialligo district would create 15 local jobs.

"Pialligo has established itself an excellent food and lifestyle destination for Canberrans as well as a popular tourist spot for visitors from the surrounding region," Mr Steel said in a statement.

"I'm pleased to see these improvements progressing following investment in detailed design through the 2020-21 ACT budget."

Community consultation over the Pialligo is expected over the next month.
