Traffic on M53 at standstill due to police incident close to bridge

Traffic on the M53 is at a standstill due to a police incident which has closed the road.

Both the Northbound and Southbound carriage ways were closed shortly before 7pm but the incident is believed to have taken place on the Southbound side, close to the Clatterbridge exit, affecting traffic heading towards Liverpool.

It is not yet clear what the incident is but people are being told to avoid the area if possible .

North West Motorway Police have confirmed that Northbound traffic has now been released but people in the queues on the Southbound carriageway should expect delays and tailbacks.

They tweeted: "J4-5 M53 traffic stopped SB due to a Police incident traffic has been released NB however there will be tail backs."

Travel site INRIX said: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to police incident on M53 Southbound from J3 A552 Woodchurch Road (Woodchurch) to J4 A5137 Brimstage Road (Bebington)."

Many people have become stuck in the queues and do not know when they will clear.

Sammie Hughes tweeted: "Anyone got any ideas m53 standstills? #m53"

Twitter user @ob1gnomie also said: "Oh bugger I’m stuck..... hope nothing serious M53 #clatterbridge"

It is believed that fire crews and paramedics are also at the scene, alongside Merseyside Police , and are speaking to someone on the bridge.

It is not yet known when the motorway will reopen.
