Traffic officers rescue dog - from the side of the M1

Traffic officers are known for dealing with crashes and road closures - but not necessarily rescuing dogs.

But that's exactly what happened when a Highways England team rescued this pooch near junction 22 of the M1, close to Markfield in Leicestershire.

Officers released pictures of the dog via Twitter on Saturday (May 29).

In a Tweet, they wrote: "If you know the owner, please call 0300 123 5000 with information."

When asked in a Tweet if they'd checked the dog for a chip, Highways England replied: "We're taking them to a vet to check."

One man on Twitter wrote: "I will take him/her if the owner isn't found or no longer wants them. Please DM me if this is an option."
