Traffic light system PCR tests 'could be scrapped' in next travel review

The traffic light system 's pricey PCR tests for vaccinated holidaymakers could be scrapped in the next travel review, according to reports.

Anyone returning home from green and amber list countries must take a PCR test two days after arriving back in the UK which can add hundreds of pounds to the price of a holiday.

But the UK Government is believed to be considering axing the tests - which cost more than £70 on average - for double-jabbed travellers.

The Times reports the tests for green and amber lists will likely be scrapped, but people who have not yet been fully vaccinated will still have to take them.

It comes as ministers could also ditch the traffic light system for international travel altogether.

Green and amber lists would be ditched in the new system which will favour vaccination status of travellers rather than the Covid rating of countries.

The red list will continue, meaning hotel quarantine measures will remain in place for travellers returning from high risk areas, The Telegraph reports.

Government officials hope the new system will ‘simplify’ holidays for people travelling out of the country from the UK.

Under current rules, fully-vaccinated travellers need one PCR test within two days of arriving in the UK from amber and green countries, with no need to self-isolate.

Those who have not been double-jabbed need to isolate for ten days and must take one test when arriving from a green country and two from amber destinations.

Travellers returning from a red list country must quarantine in a hotel for ten days and take two PCR tests.
