Long delays on A1 north after two cars overturn in crash

An accident on the A1 northbound caused traffic to be held so specialist equipment could be brought onto the motorway.

Traffic had to be held after two cars overturned onto the central reservation just before 9am on Thursday.

The accident happened on the northbound carriageway between junction 44 (A64, York/Tadcaster) to junction 45 (A659 Wattlesyke/Boston Spa).

Motorists have been warned of 30-minute delays and the queues stretch back towards Leeds, near Lotherton.

The motorway reopened at around 11.10am but Highways England warned of five miles of queues.

Our traffic partner INRIX reported: "All traffic being temporarily held due to overturned car and recovery work on A1(M) Northbound from J44 A64 (York / Tadcaster) to J45 A659 Wattlesyke (Boston Spa). Congestion to J43 (M1 Interchange).

"All traffic held to bring in equipment to recover two cars that overturned onto the central reservation around 08:50."
