Traffic held after 'police incidents' at Birkenhead and Wallasey tunnel

Two 'police incidents' were reported at the Birkenhead and Wallasey tunnel, leading one of them to be closed.

Traffic was temporarily held at the entrance of the Wallasey tunnel at around 8pm today due to a police incident on M53 Northbound at junction one of the A5139 Wallasey Dock Link South.

One eyewitness said there were "lots of police" at the tunnel and "people couldn't leave" at the Wirral end or enter.

Ambulances were also reportedly sighted at the scene.

One photo taken by an eyewitness showed huge queues near the Wallasey tunnel as traffic was stationary while emergency services dealt with the incident.

One person said on social media that they had "never seen so many police."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed there was a police incident and it was due to "concerns for a person's safety".

The police Force Incident Manager added: "There is an ongoing police incident at the Queensway Tunnel due to concerns for someone's safety, we hope to have the entrance of the tunnel opened shortly."

Another 'police incident' is also being reported at the Birkenhead tunnel at the A5036 George's Dock Gates and there were reports of long queues.

According to traffic management system Inrix the Queensway tunnel westbound remains closed.

It said: "Queensway Tunnel Westbound closed, slow traffic due to police incident at A5036 George's Dock Gates (Birkenhead Tunnel)."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police was approached for a statement on the Birkenhead tunnel incident.
