Traffic delays as Queensferry Crossing remains closed after block of ice fell on cars

The Queensferry Crossing remains closed on Tuesday morning after a block of ice fell onto cars driving over the bridge.

The closure was announced last night and is already causing major delays in Fife.

It is expected to remain shut in both directions throughout the morning rush hour.

The foul weather in the aftermath of Storm Ciara is forecast to continue throughout the day.

A diversion is available via the Kincardine Bridge but this will add on at least another 40 minutes to journeys. Congestion on the diversion route is building.

The closure was announced around 5.30pm on Monday, as snowy and windy conditions hit the east of Scotland.

Transport Scotland said it was a "precautionary measure due to risk of falling ice and snow from the cables".

Edinburgh Live spoke to a woman whose car was struck by falling ice as she made her way over the bridge.

She said the three foot block of ice badly damaged her windscreen as well as the internal lights of the car.

She said: "I just kept driving because I thought that if I stopped I could cause an accident, but I could see up ahead that ice was still falling around the second pillar.

"If one of those pieces had hit the windscreen, with it already being broken, it wouldn't have been pretty."
