Traffic crawls on roads to Northeast and South

Traffic is moving at a snail's pace on Northeast-bound roads as Songkran revellers leave Bangkok for home provinces during the long holiday period.

Traffic jams have been reported on several main roads in Nakhon Ratchasima, the gateway to the Northeast, and nearby areas on Wednesday as people head home ahead of the Songkran festivities.

Traffic was particularly congested on Highway No.204, the bypass road in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Muang district, as motorists heading to Khon Kaen got stuck in the gridlock

Vehicles trailed back along the Northeast-bound route for more than two kilometres as many travelling on Highway No.304 entered Mittraparb Road, causing bottlenecks.

Pol Col Boonlert Wongwatchana, deputy Nakhon Ratchasima police chief, said Mittraparb Road saw heavier traffic congestion this morning, particularly in Pak Chong and Sikiu districts, where a motorway was under construction.

Police had to open a 15km special traffic lane from Pak Chong district to Khlong Pai prison to facilitate traffic flow.

In Khon Kaen, a snarl-up was reported on Northeast-bound lanes from tambon Tha Phra to Muang district. Traffic police were deployed to direct the traffic flow in the areas. Chatchai Uncharoen, chief of Khon Kaen’s Muang district, on Wednesday led officials and police to open service spots along the route.

Meanwhile, in Prachuap Khiri Khan, traffic on South-bound roads was also heavy. The traffic volume was particularly bad in Pran Buri district, which links Highway No.37 and Phetkasem Road to the 14 provinces further south.
