Traffic cop walks away with only minor injuries after dramatic blue light run motorway crash

A police officer walked away with only minor injuries after his patrol car span and crashed into a motorway barrier on the M67.

Witnesses described how the cop was on a blue light run when he lost control and crashed between junctions 1 and 2 at Denton on Wednesday afternoon.

The emergency services were called to the scene and the motorway was shut.

But the officer managed to walk away from his patrol car, which suffered extensive damage to its front end and ended up facing the wrong way down the motorway.

The west-bound carriageway of the motorway was closed for a period while the emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the crash.

Greater Manchester Police later confirmed the officer had suffered only minor injuries.

An eye-witness, Clara-Jayne Bailey, posting on Facebook about the drama, wrote: "He was on blue lights, overtook some traffic, hit a patch of surface water and lost control. He walked away from it with help but was in a lot of pain."

She added: "What upset us the most was so many people who had seen it just drove around the wreckage. When we left the officer was being seen to by paramedics and seemed in good enough spirits but a bit shaken up and in pain. Scary thing for anyone!"

A spokeswoman for GMP said: "Police were called to the Ashton Road bridge of the M60 just after 3:30pm this afternoon (Wednesday 10 March) following reports of a collision involving a police car hitting a motorway barrier.

"The officer - who was responding to an incident - wasn't seriously injured and no other vehicles were involved.

"The motorway has now re-opened."
