Traffic comes to standstill on M50 after lamppost blocks road

Traffic came to a standstill on the M50 earlier today after a lamppost fell and blocked the busy motorway.

The incident happened at J13 Carrickmines, and traffic queues could be seen building all the way back to J16 Sandyford.

But there were further delays to clearing the road as it emerged electricians were blocked by drivers using the hard shoulder.

They said: "All lanes have closed N'bound after J15 Carrickmines due to a down lamppost. Traffic heavy in the area.

"When stuck in heavy traffic please refrain from driving in the hard shoulder.

"Our electrician has been delayed in traffic getting to the incident after J15 due to cars in the hard shoulder.

"What if it was an ambulance trying to get to someone that's been seriously injured?"

Heavy winds are hitting the capital today, but are expected to subside by the night-time according to Met Eireann.
