Traffic chaos in Cleland as bridge hit by lorry drivers twice in one day

Getting through Cleland proved a bridge too far for two lorry drivers on Friday.

Bellside Bridge, the most struck bridge in all of the UK, was hit twice in the space of a few hours as two HGV drivers misjudged the height with the road being shut.

The result meant traffic being diverted into Cleland for most of the day as police tried to get the road open once again.

Cleland councillor Louise Roarty said: “The council are in talks with Network Rail for a replacement deck to the Bellside Bridge, which was struck twice.

“I had a number of complaints on Friday due to the chaos on the roads around the village.

“Having been involved with moving this project forward over the last five years, I will have further dialogue this week with council officers.

“Quite rightly, villagers have had enough of drivers not understanding the height restrictions.

“When will the people of Cleland stop seeing these HGV’s being diverted or striking this bridge, causing chaos to the village?”

HGVs crashing into the bridge have become a regular occurrence with more than 50 incidents in the past five years.
