Traffic chaos in Adelaide after inner-city tram breakdown

Buses and cars were directed around the stationary tram to keep peak-hour traffic moving.

A tram that broke down on one of the busiest intersections in Adelaide has been moved after blocking traffic for several hours.

The intersection of North Terrace and King William Street was cleared just after 6:00pm, where the tram had been stuck since about 2:30pm.

Trams are running as normal between Glenelg and Victoria Square, but substitute buses are being used between Victoria Square and the Entertainment Centre.

Adelaide Metro said the substitute buses will stay in place all night, despite the tram being moved from the busy intersection.

Earlier in the day buses were weaving around the broken-down tram and drivers in the CBD were experiencing heavy delays.

Back in January, the same CBD intersection was closed for about a fortnight while new tram lines were laid, in preparation for trams to start operating along the eastern end of North Terrace.

A cyclist waiting to get through the intersection said the disruption was "inconvenient" but watched on with a smile.

"It's alright for me, I can walk across with my bike if I want to, but I feel sorry for the drivers behind me," he told the ABC.

"That's the beauty of the bike really."
