Traffic chaos as cars parked on stunning Inch beach in Kerry hit with high tides

Thousands of people flooded to local beaches over the past week as temperatures reached record highs in Ireland.

However, traffic chaos ensued on one Irish beach after high tides caught drivers out.

Beachgoers parked on the stunning Inch Beach in Co Kerry were left shocked after the tide came in, leaving their cars stranded in the sand.

Lines of cars parked on the beach stretched an impressive distance along the strand, making it almost impossible for some cars to escape the rising tides.

According to Radio Kerry presenter Jerry O'Sullivan, traffic was backed up for hours in and around the blue flag beach.

People were seen attempting to move their cars further up the beach to avoid the oncoming waves.

Meanwhile, Ireland's heatwave came to an abrupt end on Sunday evening as thunderstorms and intense lightning was seen in many areas.

An Orange Thunderstorm warning was issued by Met Eireann for the entire country on Sunday, with 14 counties still under the warning until 10pm.

These include Munster, Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Kildare, Wicklow, and Dublin.

Thunderstorm activity is expected in these areas. However, due to the sporadic nature of development, not all areas will be affected.

Heavy downpours of rain and hail will occur in places with flooding where heavy downpours occur.

The news comes as Met Eireann's long range forecast has predicted a high pressure to dominate conditions in the final week of August as temperatures climb above average, bringing generally settled weather across the country.

Rain is also expected to be below average in the final week of August, giving the perfect opportunity to enjoy the last of the summer sunshine.
