Traffic chaos as both sides of M2 motorway closed near Ashbourne, Co Meath after crash

Both sides of a major motorway were closed this evening following multiple crashes.

Emergency services have rushed to the incidents, which happened near the J3 on the M2 near Ashbourne, Co Meath.

Meath Fire Service tweeted a picture of a crash on the M2 at 8.11pm this evening and added: "Ashbourne & Dunshaughlin attending an RTC on the M2, the southbound lane between pillo and j3 ratoath is closed.

"Northbound lane backlogged & reduced to one lane following earlier incident. @GardaTraffic and @AmbulanceNAS in attendance."

A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are at the scene of a collision involving a tractor & trailer and a car on the M2 north of J3 Ashbourne.

"The collision occurred shortly after 6pm. The motorway is closed in both directions to facilitate the removal of the trailer unit and diversions are in place.

"The driver of the car (male age not known) was removed by ambulance to hospital with minor injuries. A full report is awaited."

M50 Dublin, an account that posts traffic alerts for the motorway and surrounding roads, tweeted at 7.27pm: "All lanes have closed both sides at J3 Ashbourne due to an over turned truck.

"Emergency services are on scene. Please avoid if possible."

Live Drive added: "N2 ROAD CLOSURE: There is a full road closure of the N2 in both directions currently at J3 Ashbourne South due to a serious incident. Take alternative routes."

One man said on Twitter: "The crash on the M2 coming out of Ashbourne has loads of glass and car bits scattered from right to left and one man with a torch waving and the traffic towards Ashbourne is all the way back past Liffey Valley (if you get what I mean). Anyone on the way to Ashbourne GL (good luck)."

AA Roadwatch has tweeted that the M2 northbound has been cleared.

Meanwhile, there was also a collision on the northbound side of the M50 between J9 Red Cow and J7 Lucan in the last hour which is blocking the right and middle lanes. Emergency services are on the scene.

There was also a collision on the M50 northbound at 7.14pm between J6 Blanchardstown and J5 Finglas.
