Traffic chaos and reports of people 'walking to Wythenshawe' after Manchester Airport security alert

Traffic chaos is being reported due to the closure of the coach and railway station at Manchester Airport following this morning's security alert.

There are long queues and heavy traffic on the A555 Ringway Road West in Wythenshawe as a result.

Images show bumper-to-bumper traffic along the approach to the airport.

There's also queueing traffic on the exit slip road of the eastbound M56 at junction five for the airport due to the police incident.

Congestion is being reported back to junction six - the Hale Four Seasons roundabout.

Reports on social media claimed 'all traffic to and from the airport' was jammed, with one poster on Twitter saying people were 'walking towards Wythenshawe'.

The closure of the area by police has also led to difficulties in getting round the site of the airport.

Images from the scene also capture long queues for taxis as public transport options from the airport are currently unavailable.

Police said however that traffic was 'returning to normality' as road closures around the airport start to be lifted.

A GMP spokesman said: "The majority of road closures that were put in place as enquiries were carried out by officers at Manchester Airport transport interchange have now been lifted and traffic is returning to normality.

"A small scene remains in place in the ground floor area of the coach station as officers continue with enquiries."

An eyewitness described the moment she saw a naked man running around the travel interchange before police were called to reports of a suspicious package.

The discovery led to a full evacuation and a controlled explosion was carried out.

A GMP spokesman said: "Bomb disposal officers are at Manchester Airport transport interchange to assist GMP with enquiries.

"As part of their assessment to ensure the package is safe, a controlled explosion took place.

"The cordon will remain in place as a precautionary measure as enquiries continue."
