Traffic chaos and M60 tailbacks as huge car meet-up brings hundreds of people to Tameside

A huge car meet-up sparked traffic chaos in Tameside and on the M60.

Hundreds of people met up on an industrial estate on Windmill Lane, in Denton, just off the motorway on Sunday afternoon.

Images from the meet up show large groups of youngsters lining the streets, with drivers in the centre revving their engines.

The meet up caused long tailbacks on the M60 and the M67, as well as congestion on surrounding roads.

Police were forced to close the M60 anticlockwise, at junction 24, for Denton, to deal with the traffic problems.

The police helicopter was reportedly seen circling overhead.

There were also reports of drivers speeding up and down the hardshoulder.

One driver said it took 90 minutes just to travel between Hyde and Denton, while one worker was left trapped on an industrial estate until the car meet came to an end.

Mike Gould, of M60 Cleaning Supplies Ltd, said: "I got in at 7am, I saw there was a banner for a big event. It seems to have been a well organised event.

“This is a secure site, you’re not allowed to have events like this. You can hear the cars revving. Wheels are spinning. They are doing wheelies on motorbikes. I’m glad I’m inside.

“There are young kids without their parents. I can’t go until they go, I could be here until 10pm. It might get worse, you don’t know do you?

“I don’t want my car being rammed by people wheel spinning.”

Brian Roberts, a resident, told the M.E.N: "They have come from all over the UK as far as London.

“The whole of Denton is gridlocked. It sounds like bonfire night with the cars popping.”

Police posted about the incident on Facebook and said it was causing a ‘massive strain’ on their services.

The post, on the Greater Manchester Police Tameside page, said: "Officers are currently dealing with an incident at Tameside Business Centre, Windmill Lane in Denton where there is an increased activity in vehicular traffic.

“Can we please ask that you avoid this and the surrounding area.

“Sadly this is putting a massive strain on our services at this time and causing a back log of traffic, however we hope we can quickly have things resolved with your help.”

Denton and Reddish MP Andrew Gwynne tweeted: "Completely irresponsible and I'm informed the police are on it. In fact as I type the police helicopter is overhead."

By around 9pm the revellers had left the industrial estate and traffic returned to normal.

It is unknown if there have been any arrests or a police investigation at this stage.
